TED BOTSFORD joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic in August 2017. Prior to his appointment in Los Angeles, he played in the Seattle Symphony and as Assistant Principal Bass and Acting Principal Bass of the Oregon Symphony. Ted is also Principal Bass of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz, CA.
In November 2014, Ted gave the Portland premier of John Harbison’s Concerto for Bass Viol with the Portland Youth Philharmonic. An avid chamber musician, Ted has performed with Music in the Vineyards in Napa, CA and with Portland area groups Third Angle, Fear No Music and 45th Parallel. He also presented a recital of contemporary solo bass music at the 2017 International Society of Bassists convention in Ithaca, NY.
In addition to performing, Ted is very dedicated to teaching and maintains a private studio. He was a guest artist at the Suzuki Association of the Americas Conference in Minneapolis in 2014 and has taught at workshops around the country. A graduate of Rice University, Ted earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in bass performance with Paul Ellison. He also received the Diplôme and Teaching Certificate from the Institut International François Rabbath. He began his bass studies with renowned pedagogue George Vance and is certified to teach the Vance method.
